Keeper provides multiple options regarding which position changes to use in your league.
There are two different sets of position changes you can choose to receive – "Keeper" and "Industry", with subtle differences on how and when changes occur.
Keeper (default)
- Changes occur every 3 weeks following rounds 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 & 18
- Requires a change to the players "primary position" (i.e. if they play in two positions, the one with clearly more game time)
Industry
- Positions follow the standard set of positions used by other fantasy AFL games
- Changes occur every 6 weeks, expected to be after rounds 5, 11 and 17.
- Requires ~35% time in a new position to gain eligibility
Under both systems It's possible for players to gain triple position eligibility if this setting is enabled.
Position change process
For Industry positions, we simply follow suit after changes are announced on other platforms.
For Keeper positions, we strive to enhance the standard set of positions with more regular adjustments that we believe are better suited for draft fantasy purposes.
Every three weeks we follow the process below for deciding new positions:
Step 1: Check the current position of each player
The AFL website grades players into one of the seven positions listed below, and are regularly updated throughout the season based on changes in role. Given a player can only have one of these positions, we deem this to be their "primary" position.
These can be translated to fantasy positions relatively easily.
| AFL position | Fantasy Pos | Fantasy (Key Pos leagues) |
| Key Defender | DEF | KEYD |
| General Defender | DEF | DEF |
| Ruck | RUC | RUC |
| Midfielder | MID | MID |
| Midfielder/Forward | MID/FWD | MID/FWD |
| Medium Forward | FWD | FWD |
| Key Forward | FWD | KEYF |
Step 2: Compare to existing fantasy positions
Once we know what their fantasy position should be based on their current real-life position, we find a list of players who are in-line for a potential change.
The one complexity are those deemed as Midfielder/Forward. We use our judgement to allocate them as either a midfielder or a forward, as we only allow one position to be added at a time. This determination is made after looking at statistics, heatmaps, eye test and trends. In cases where it's not clear cut (e.g. data indicates a 60/40 split or less), we may wait another three weeks to reassess with more data.
Step 3: Remove players with limited data
Players can be regraded quite frequently, even based on their role in training or reserve grades.
We require a role change to be present at AFL level, so players must have played in at least three of their clubs last five games to be eligible for a change.
Step 4: Apply the new positions
Once the positions are decided we update leagues to reflect this.
If a player is due to receive their third position, but you've disabled triple position players, the new position will be ignored.
In leagues with waivers enabled, any free agents who have received a change will be placed on waivers to provide more equitable access.
FAQs
Can we use both Keeper and Industry positions?
Yes. In 2026 we added the ability for you to use both in combination. Previously only one set was possible.
How come Keeper position changes don't update until Wednesday?
We want to allow maximum time for players to receive any position regrades after the current weekend of play.
Can a player lose a position?
No. We only ever add positions. The only way a player can lose a position is if your commissioner changes the set of positions being used, or makes manual adjustments via the Edit Player Positions tool.
I don't agree with Keeper's position changes, what can be done?
There are several options:
- Disable position changes in your league.
- Change to Industry to follow the more commonly used position changes.
- Manually customise position changes in your league. Commissioners can do this via Settings > Edit Player Positions and can add or remove position eligibility to players at any time.
Given the options available to self manage, we do not guarantee a response to questions regarding individual player changes.
Wait, my player is listed as a different position on the AFL app?
It's possible that positions changed since we did our analysis. Additionally, for midfielder/forwards, the AFL website and app sometimes show different positions so it's best to check both.
We play with Key Positions enabled, can a player become KEYD/DEF or KEYF/FWD?
No. In cases where a player is re-graded from Key to General, or vice-versa, they will stay with their initial classification for fantasy.
